About Us!

Why Knot was born from a simple need—finding space for plants—and grew into a passion for creativity, sustainability, and community connection. I’m Lindsey, the sole maker, teacher, and heart behind Why Knot, a Harrisburg, PA-based macrame studio committed to offering truly handmade and ethical products in an era of fast fashion and overconsumption.

The idea for Why Knot sprouted during the COVID-19 pandemic when I filled my home with propagated houseplants from my mom’s collection. As I quickly ran out of floor and counter space, I found myself looking up—literally. I remembered the hanging plants that filled my mom’s and grandma’s homes and felt an instant connection to that memory. Determined to make my own plant hangers, I bought some cord and wooden rings, found a YouTube tutorial, and was immediately hooked. The process of creating something functional and beautiful from just string and a ring was exhilarating. I realized then that I could create anything I could imagine, and that’s when Why Knot took root.

I soon noticed that there weren’t any macrame classes in our area, despite the relaxing and simple nature of the craft. Not everyone can learn from a book or video; many need personalized, hands-on guidance. That’s why I set out to provide affordable, high-quality macrame products and classes that people can enjoy, whether for themselves or as unique, thoughtful gifts.

At Why Knot, everything is made by hand, right here in the USA. I use 100% recycled cotton cord, and I’m committed to sourcing materials sustainably—whether it’s sticks from nature for plant hangers or treasures from local thrift shops. With over 20 color options, our products range from plant hangers to keychains, coasters, and even disco ball car charms. Even the cord scraps don’t go to waste; I send them to a fellow fiber artist who transforms them into art yarn for weaving and other creative projects.

Our classes are designed for busy moms, professionals, plant enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys gathering with friends for a fun, new experience. I offer a variety of class projects, both popular and seasonal, in collaboration with local businesses, restaurants, bars, and yoga studios to create the perfect learning environment. Every student receives a free digital macrame knot guide, and I’m always here to provide personal, patient instruction.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of helping more than 1,000 students learn the art of macrame, connect with their community, and discover a new skill. Starting September 1, 2024, Why Knot will be part of the Creative Spark Arts collaborative, giving us a home base for private lessons, larger projects, and exciting events.

At Why Knot, we believe that anyone can create something beautiful with their hands, and we’re here to help you every step of the way. Whether you’re looking to learn a new craft, find a unique handmade gift, or simply unwind with a creative outlet, we’re confident that Why Knot will inspire you.

Let’s create something amazing together!
